CCSC to mandate Type 2 hard hats

As of July 1, the use of Type 2 hard hats with integrated chin straps will be mandatory across all Canadian Construction Safety Council member construction sites. All personnel including trade partners and visitors will be required to have and wear a Type 2 hard hat with manufacturer-approved four-point integrated chin strap while working on CCSC member construction sites. The class of Type 2 hardhat must be appropriate for the hazards encountered and the certification must meet local regulatory requirements (for example, CSA and/or ANSI certification).
This change is being implemented because traumatic brain injuries account for approximately 25 percent of all construction-related fatalities, over half of which result from falls, especially from ladders, roofs and scaffolding. Additional causes include falling objects and struck-by incidents. Research consistently shows that Type 2 hard hats, especially those with integrated retention systems, offer greater protection and help reduce the risk of serious or fatal head injuries in the following ways:
