How to Avoid Unnecessary Insulation Waste on Your Jobsite
BY GRACE HENRY ON APRIL 12, 2022
It’s true that fiberglass insulation makes buildings more energy efficient – and that a well-insulated building saves on heating and cooling costs. As a contractor, you’ll want your customers to enjoy both of these benefits. Using insulation the smart way will help you do both. Here are some pointers that will help.
Plan It Out
The R-value you need is a function of the local climate, type of structure, and applicable building codes. While codes call for the minimum R-value, you may want or need more heat resistance than the code specifies.
Once you have your R-values pinned down, think about the type of insulation you’ll need. InsulPure™ by CertainTeed comes in many forms. Batts and rolls – available both faced and unfaced – come in a variety of dimensions. For an attic installation, a combination of faced and unfaced products in a double layer can be used. Or you may opt to use a blown-in product, in which case you’ll also need a blower like the Bolt™ 3.
Keep in mind that HVAC ducts (like the thermal envelope) are required to meet certain thermal levels and R-values. InsulPure Duct Wrap can help achieve this efficiently, and exterior walls may need a moisture barrier like our MemBrain™ continuous air barrier and smart vapor retarder.
In addition, varying types of structural design may call for different installation products and different installation methods. Decide in advance on the installation methods you’re going to use. Then carefully measure the dimensions of the areas to be insulated and use our insulation calculator to determine how much you’ll need. Once you’ve estimated the quantity of insulation required, round up the figures to ensure you have enough material.
Store Properly
Fiberglass insulation products are compressed for shipping. They take up less room while they’re compressed, making them easier to store on a jobsite.
When your insulation arrives, leave it packaged, which will keep your supplies dry and clean until you’re ready for the installation. If your insulation happens to get wet, let it air dry before use. InsulPure is certified formaldehyde-free and also meets the GREENGUARD Gold standard for VOC emissions, so off-gassing during storage is never a concern.
Measure and Cut
Always read the manufacturer’s instructions on the insulation packages before starting. Once the package is opened, the insulation will expand quickly and automatically. Open packages as needed, rather than all at once, to save space and prevent accidental damage.
Be sure to map out utilities, fixtures, and obstacles prior to cutting insulation. Insulation batts and rolls can be patched back together if cut incorrectly, but it’s best to avoid the need for repairs in the first place. Cut insulation with the proper knife, on the right side, and always use a straight edge – even when cutting a section as small as a 2’ x 4’.
InsulPure is less dusty than many other types of insulation and it’s also softer. So, cutting it is easy, fast, and clean.
Save and Reuse Scraps
Use the scraps and waste from cuts to fit insulation around and behind spaces like junction boxes, water lines, and waste lines. Leftover insulation pieces should also be used to fill in the framing gaps around windows and doors. Make sure not to compress these pieces as they are fitted in, or the R-value may be compromised.
The manufacturing process and standards used to produce InsulPure maximize efficiency and environmental stewardship. The same care applied during installation will make for a faster, cleaner, healthier, and potentially more profitable jobsite.
