Cyber Security - Social Engineering

THINK CYBER – A New Safety Initiative

By Sarah Bridges

Kenroc has recently launched a new initiative called THINK CYBER, where we share important information and tips on Cyber Safety. Once an internal tool, we are excited to be bringing relevant installments to you, our customers!

This month is all about Social Engineering

Hackers don’t always rely on technology to break in. Sometimes, their best tool is human psychology. Social engineering is when attackers manipulate trust, pressure, or fear to trick people into giving up sensitive information or breaking security rules.

Phishing: Fake emails or texts that look legitimate, luring you into clicking links or sharing credentials.

Pretexting: Attackers create a convincing story, like posing as IT support, to earn trust.

Baiting: Dropping a “confidential” USB stick in a public spot, hoping someone plugs in.

Tailgating: Slipping in behind an authorized person through a secure door.

Attackers know that rushed decisions are poor decisions, so social engineers often use urgency to cloud judgment. By creating artificial time pressure, they push people into making hasty mistakes.

Follow these tips whenever processing a strange, or urgent request:

Pause before acting. If it feels rushed, slow down.

Verify independently. Use a trusted channel, not the one in the message.

Stick to policy. Legitimate requests don’t require shortcuts.

Ask for backup. A colleague can help spot red flags.

Report, Report, Report: Report suspicious activity to the appropriate party of your business ASAP
